MENTAL COACHING: MENTAL TRAINING FOR TOP PERFORMANCE IN TRAINING AND COMPETITION

YOU CANNOT LIE WITH HORSES… THEY CAN PERCEIVE WHAT YOU FEEL AND WHAT YOU THINK…

Have you ever found yourself during competitions in one of those situations where; “even though you technically know what to do and you are physically prepared, you get paralyzed by stress and emotions and you cannot give all the best of yourself?”

Did you ever tell yourself after a show one of the following things? : “I could have ridden much better”, “I forgot to do ….. this or that….. “, “I was paralyzed and couldn’t react… “, “I wasn’t concentrated enough / I lost concentration “, “ I was too nervous”, “I wasn’t sure we could make it”, “I couldn’t handle the pressure” “I was too tense to focus on what I was doing”…. etc.

In how many competitions or important events did you underperform because you were actually paralyzed and too nervous and you couldn’t handle the pressure and therefore were not able to perform at your maximum level?
How come that at home and in training you can perform at the best of your ability but then sometimes, often, for reasons you cannot really understand, in competition you can’t?

Did you ever ask yourself: “Why does this happen? Why can’t I always perform at my best when I’m under pressure?”

Well, first of all as you know, Horses are extremely sensitive creatures and they can perceive every single emotion, thought and mental state of their rider. For this reason “you cannot lie with horses” … they know exactly what you are feeling and thinking…

How do you think your horse will react if you are feeling nervous, insecure, tense, confused, anxious, if you are not concentrated or if you do not really believe in yourself and that you can make it??
Your Horse will probably get nervous, tense and probably will not be 100% at your aids, for this reason it is likely that your performance will NOT BE at the best of yours and your horses abilities and will also possibly make mistakes. This will result in a low performance.

On the contrary, how do you think your horse will react when you are calm, concentrated, sure of yourself, totally focused and mentally trained on your competition?
Your horse will probably be concentrated and be 100% at your aids, for this reason it is likely that your performance will be at the best of yours and your horses abilities.

WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE?? YOUR MIND CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE…

In professional sports the ability of the athlete to handle pressure becomes a fundamental element for the quality of the performance and for the results in competition.
DO YOU KNOW HOW TO TRAIN YOUR MIND?
HOW MUCH ARE YOU TRAINING YOUR MIND?

Even if you are technically a top rider are you really sure that you are always able to manage your mind and your emotions when you are under pressure?

Eva Rosenthal

When the MIND influences your PERFORMANCE…

Our Performance is given by the following formula:

PERFORMANCE = POTENTIAL – INTERFERENCE

POTENTIAL is our maximum performance considering 100% of us technically, physically and mentally.
INTERFERENCES are all those mechanisms of self-sabotage that our mind puts into practice when we do not have the strategies and tools to mentally train for our competition and to properly manage stress.

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN? WHAT ARE EXACLTY INTEFERENCES?

When we find ourselves in situations of “big pressure” and we don’t have any specific strategy or tools to handle the pressure, we are not able to manage our emotions so we get ourselves overwhelmed by the situation and most of the time we are not able to face the competition with a clear mind but on the contrary we are lead by the INTERFERENCES and will probably: feel nervous, loose concentration, loose mental clarity, feel insecure of ourselves and of our capabilities, loose self esteem and when this happens we will probably not be able to perform at the best of our abilities, therefore we will obtain low performances and results…

Some riders have incredible talent but they are not able to handle pressure and perform at their peak performance during competition and for this reason they will never reach top levels or maybe they win the first day but are not able to handle the pressure for all the 3 /4 days of the competition.

Sometimes the interferences and the elements that limit the riders performance are unconscious and it becomes difficult for the rider itself to understand what is happening in his/her mind and to recognise what are the element that are self-sabotaging his/her performance.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE THE STRATEGIES AND TOOLS TO MANAGE YOUR EMOTIONS AND TO MENTALLY TRAIN FOR YOUR COMPETITION?

Eva Rosenthal is a certified Ekis' mental coach.

The support that helps: Mental Coaching.

The role of a Mental Coach becomes very important to support the rider to train his/her MIND to top performance. Many top performance athletes regularly train mentally to continuously improve their performance. At top-level sports all athletes are technically and physically trained at maximum levels, what often makes the difference is the Mental Training and the ability to use the mind for top performance.

Some athletes however concentrate in training daily to improving their Technical and Physical skills with hours of top level training forgetting to include in their training also the part concerning the Mental skills. In sports and also any other top levels what really makes the difference is your mind.

HOW CAN A MENTAL COACH SUPPORT YOU?

A professional Mental Coach helps the athlete to identify and rationalize which are the main interferences that are disturbing him/her from always performing at maximum level and gives the athlete the skills and tools to manage and train his/her mind by developing strategies to perform at their best.

The mental coach supports the rider to create mental strategies that will enable him/her to prepare mentally for the competition and therefore perform at his maximum technical, physical and mental level.
How does it work? Mental coaching sessions are very direct and work on the athlete’s specific weak areas and it takes very few sessions to create big positive changes. The Personal coaching sessions are created so that they will work on all the interferences that are consciously or unconsciously created in the riders mind.

Some of the main topics on which I work on are for example:

  • Development of tools to manage the emotional state (so that you are able to manage your emotions under stress)
  • Working on conscious or unconscious “limiting beliefs” and transform them into “empowering beliefs”
  • Efficient Goal Setting
  • Effective communication with yourself and your Team
  • Strategies for mental warm up before competition and after competition
  • Development of strategies to improve concentration
  • Development of strategies to “get into the flow”
  • Mental training to manage “Internal and External Pressure”
  • Effective communication between trainer/rider/family members
  • Managing internal dialogue
  • Development of strategies to go beyond your “mental limits”
  •  and many other topics…

Having the strategies and tools to manage your mind will give you the keys always at your best and this will improve your performance and your results.

MY ROLE AS A MENTAL COACH …. WHY WORK WITH ME ….

Go beyond your “mental limits".

Eva Rosenthal :
I started riding at the age of 9.
In the year 2000 I started competing in Dressage, I was 23 years old.
In 2 years I won my first Italian Championship and in 6 years I participated to the WEG 2006 in Aachen and was qualified for Beijing 2008 Olympics.
In 10 years of competition I won more than 25 medals in Italian Championships, European Championship for Iberian Horses (Masters du Cheval Iberique).

All this happened whilst: I learnt 6 languages, got a University and Executive Master degree in Economics and was working as HR Manager in Multinational Company!!

All these experiences allowed me, but on the other hand, also forced me to develop a Winning Mentality and to learn how to manage my emotions before and after important events or competitions so to be able to perform at the best of my abilities always.

I participated at my first Mental Coaching seminar in 2003 and that day was the moment in which I started to work with a Mental Coach and started to train my mental skills. This gave me many important tools to manage my mind, improve my concentration and manage my emotions under stress, thanks to this I improved a lot my performance in competition and this allowed me to win a lot of competition but most of all I was able to perform at the best of my abilities always.

Since then I started studying, training and then working to become a Sport Mental Coach.

I became a Personal Coach at Ekis srl and then certified as LSPC (Licensed Sports Performance Coach) and started working with one of the top Sport Mental Coaches in Italy.

This training experiences together with my equestrian and professional rider career allowed me to develop unique competences that enable me to support as a Mental Coach top level riders in every area. Riding at WEG in Aachen gave me the opportunity to test my mental training and I managed to reach my goal at that time : ride a clear test with no mistakes!!

I have been working as a Mental Coach with many National and International riders in Dressage, Eventing and Show Jumping , from amateur to top level, a couple of them were in the top 20 at London Olympics and WEG 2014 in Caen.

Some of the riders I worked with in the past years are : Goncalo Carvalho (Dressage ranked 16th London Olympics 2012) , Bertram Allen (WEG 2014), Valentina Truppa , and many other riders in all disciplines.
I was the Mental Coach for the “Young Riders Academy” 2014 program, a program for the development of talented young riders in the show jumping . http://www.ridersacademy.eu/

I also work a lot with trainers to help them improve and develop communication techniques and improve their communication with the riders.

How do I work?

I help riders to develop and train Mental skills to improve their performance and ride at the best of their abilities.

I organize personal coaching for the single riders or also for the stable team. I work in one-to-one sessions live or also often on Skype and/or by telephone.
